The Looking Sideways Project

Looking Sideways

Launching in Tignes during the Winter X Games week, looking sideways is a new project which aims to bring art, photography, music, film making and riding together in an ongoing series of events, exhibitions and, of course, rocking parties.

Snowboarding’s (boardsports) relationship with film, music and art is undeniable - from the classic video parts that inspired us all and introduced the soundtracks of our roadtrips, to the art and graphics which adorn boards, tshirts and the stickers that we leave in hard to reach places everywhere we go. The surf, skate and snow industry is built on a culture of rampant creativity. About time then, for a project which celebrates this… and gives a little back.

The launch event in Tignes, France, from March 14-19 promises an action packed 5-day programme featuring live music from acts as varied as rising super star Ben Howard to the hard-rocking Gentlemens Pistols, alongside DJs, cutting edge art shows, photography exhibitions, design competitions, pro riding photo-sessions & demos, film making, on location magazine publishing, live blogging, film premieres and much, much more.

The infamous loop Bar will be transformed to host the inaugural fringe programme: by day offering a looking sideways live art wall, interactive sculpture and a miniramp with open access and pro demos hosted by Vans (who will also, of course, be bringing their infamous waffle stand!). Apres and evenings will see five nights of music, parties, intoxicating art and general good times.

Looking Sideways will provide an inclusive, world class creative outlet to established mainstream events, adding value, depth and fun to the fringes of competitive events in the boardsports calendar. Crucially, looking sideways events are free with access to anyone with an open mind and, with the aim of giving something back and raising awareness, art, photography and swag from Vans and other partners will be raffled off in aid of our environmental partner POW (Protect Our Winters).

The organisers will set up a media hub at the Dragon lodge where press can gain access to artists, musicians and riders involved in the event. Media partner Huck magazine will also be setting up a mobile studio - producing videos, holding interviews, live blogging, a short film and a free digital minimag throughout the week.

In essence looking sideways is just another point of view. It exists to capture and reflect the deeper lifestyle and passion and showcase the depth and diversity of the snowboarding community and the roots of the sport.
