The event designed by snowboarders for snowboarders was abruptly bought forward this week. True to the moto – It’s on when it’s on! A decision was made to bring the main event forward to the only sunny day forcast. And what a day it was!

It was a cracking turnout from both riders and spectators alike! Everyone was there to witness the battle of who was going to claim the Waengl Taengl Trophy for 2011.

Defending champions “Team Absolut” took the trophy back to their home town in Styria last year, but this year they were challenged by 2 homegrown Aesthetiker teams – local names like Steve Gruber and Chris Kroell. During training, “Absolut” team captain Herby Thaler took a stack and injured his shoulder forcing him to pull out of the event. This weakened the defending champion, clearing way for a new podium.

Unfortunately due to strong winds, the competition had to be cut short to one day. The qualification results in turn had to become the final result! Judges were super impressed with the performance from Team96. Led by Steve Gruber, the team had strong clean runs, and well rehearsed choreography. “I was not a single day in the fun park this whole season. What a surprise that I could bring our trophy back home to Mayrhofen” spoke Steve about his win. For the third time the 34-year-old rider from Lower Austria won the winner’s trophy (2003, 2007 and 2011) for himself and his crew.

Skating and snowboarding have always gone together, and this was proven at the two sessions held at the mega mini ramp in the Waengl Event Hall.

Tuesday evening saw the best trick session and on Wednesday it was Cash for your Tash which bought out many funny faces and a little cash in the back pocket to spend at the Run Vie party later on.

A particular highlight was the Tag Team Contest where dual riders stomped it out together on the mini ramp. The top team for this event was Andrew Scott and Josh Young from the UK. It’s not over yet! Thursday get down to the Optical night in the Wangl Club room. Rhythm hosts the ‘Give a Trunk’ Art Gallery and Auction. All proceeds will go towards the Broken Bird Foundation, with special attention to rescuing injured Birds of Prey in the Zillertal. Headlining the night’s music feast, Scott Sullivan & The Ruff Pack close out the night with a Jazz/Rock ménage not to be missed!

It all wraps up on Friday afternoon with a street concert in front of the Penkenbahn with Texta & S.K. Invitational followed by the ‘FINAL FUNK OFF’ party featuring the big guns, Texta & S.K. Invitational, Edo G, Akrobatik & Mr Lif and special guests live on stage.
