Vans Wängl Tängl Art Exhibition hosted by Looking Sideways

The Looking Sideways art show opened last night at the Vans Wängl Tängl Presented by G-Shock in Mayrhofen, Austria.  A couple of hundred party-goers and art fans checked out works on display by Fos, French, Blaise Rosenthal, Ed Templeton, Tristan Huber, Corey Smith, Schoph, Danny Wainwright, Danny Larsen and Tim Karpinski.

“It’s been great to be part of a show that brings together such a strong line-up of artists and it’s pretty amazing to see everyone’s different styles”, said artist Schoph, who used the occasion to premiere a new work called Dead Questions in the Eyes. “I’ve been in plenty of shows now but the Looking Sideways crew have definitely raised the bar in terms of the space and the quality of the work”.

Other highlights at the show included a huge 6’ by 4’ illustration by skater and artist French, which dominated the gallery in Mayrhofen’s Europahaus, and the start of a huge live art piece by Looking Sideways art director Owen Tozer. It’s being created using images sent in by members of the public, who were invited to contribute to the project by uploading images of their eyes looking sideways to the LS Facebook page, or by emailing them to eyes@wearelookingsideways.com.

The final piece will be used to create the graphics for an exclusive run of limited edition Looking Sideways x Endeavor x Vans Wängl Tängl snowboards, with the winners of the boards chosen from those who contributed images.

Tozer and some of the artists in attendance at the show will be working on the piece on site at the Europahaus throughout the week, so members of the public have until Friday 23rd March to send in their eyes and have a chance of winning one of the boards.

Tomorrow night’s music line up will continue the “Contest-ival” spirit of the event with a heavy line up for the FREE music concert at the Arena in Mayrhofen.  Semprre Caoz, Those Furious Flames and Truckfighters will play the show headlined by Seether.

Looking Sideways Artist Profile: Tim Karpinski

Timothy John Karpinski Jr is a Portland, Oregon-based artist originally from Edison, New Jersey who got his first break creating graphics for the pro model snowboard of his childhood friend Danny Kass. Following X-Games and Olympic success, Kass successfully launched the glove company Grenade, with Tim as creative director. Tim is currently art director at Gnu Snowboards, runs the Together Gallery in Portland, and is an acclaimed artist having exhibited at Vancouver, Miami, San Francisco and London.

“Karpinski is that rare combo of ‘dreamer’ and ‘doer’,” says Andrew Hosner of the Los Angeles-based Thinkspace Gallery. “Many encompass one of these traits, seldom both. He is a master of wit, a lover of folk and owner of one of the finest art reference libraries this side of the Mississippi.”

“From a young age I’ve always been making things,” says Tim himself. “Building forts turned into building skate ramps which lead to building art installations. I love the art making process, from the initial spark of the ‘idea’, the creation to the finished product. Art for me is very personal and everything I make is a direct reflection on my feelings about this world and my struggle and fascination with trying to understand it and find my purpose within it.”

Tim will be exhibiting at the Looking Sideways art show at Wangl Tangl in March of 2012.

Looking Sideways Artist Profile: Danny Wainwright

Danny Wainwright is a skater, skate-shop owner, artist and designer from Bristol, England. A pro skater for fifteen years, Danny is one of the UK’s most famous skateboarding exports. An interest in graffiti and street art introduced him to painting at an early age, while a keen eye for design has seen him create and develop the identity of the legendary Bristol skate shop Fifty Fifty, which he co-founded in 1997. Recent years have seen Danny’s art move further from their graffiti origins and take a more abstract route, while a move to Barcelona in 2009 was closely followed by the first highly acclaimed gallery show of his work alongside friend and fellow artist RichT.

When we invited Danny to exhibit in the Looking Sideways exhibition at Wangl Tangl we thought we’d ask him a few questions about his art…

Looking Sideways Artist Profile – Blaise Rosenthal

Blaise Rosenthal is a legend in snowboarding circles, and is rapidly making a name for himself as an artist. He’s a key part of our show at Wangl Tangl, and will also be coming along himself to meet the crew, check out the show and explain more about his art in person. As well as find time for a cheeky shred as well we hope. Check the interview the Looking Sideways crew just posted about his art by clicking here, and watch the film below for more from Blaise himself.

Looking Sideways Artist Profile: Ed Templeton

http://wearelookingsideways.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/TEMPLETON_SLIDE.jpg

Ed Templeton is a skateboarding legend-turned-artist from Huntington Beach, California. He is best known for starting the skate company Toy Machine in 1993, a company who have gone on to uncover some of the most influential skaters ever to have stood on a board, including Bam Margera, Jamie Thomas, Chad Muska and Kerry Getz, as well as releasing board graphics, adverts and films that have always taken skating in a new, creative direction. Ed was famous in the skate world for his skateboard deck graphics, before coming to prominence in the mainstream art world after winning $50,000 dollars for his photography book Teenage Smokers in a Search for Art prize in 2001. Ed also paints, makes films and creates photography books, and was an obvious interviewee for the “Beautiful Losers” project, a touring art exhibition, collected art book and feature documentary film that also included Shepard Fairey, Harmony KorineMike Mills, Steven “Espo” Powers, Aaron Rose, and Thomas Campbell,

Ed’s blog, described as a “traffic jam on the information super highway,” can be found on the Toy Machine website, and is a window into his vastly creative world, showing Ed as he takes in art exhibitions around the world, a hectic traveling schedule still as head of Toy Machine, and the site includes some fantastic drawings, paintings, photographs and short films detailing his life in general. Ed’s wife Deanne Templeton is often described as Ed’s muse, and also blogs about their adventures, with fantastic photography and more behind-the-scenes peaks into the couple’s life. In 2010 Ed toured created the The Cemetery of Reason show (and consequent book), the biggest collection of his art to date. The show opened at Gent’s SMAK museum, and Emerica made a film prior to the event:

Limited Edition Looking Sideways X Vans Wangl Tangl Posters

With ten days to go until our show at the 2012 Vans Wangl Tangl opens, we’re stoked to release our official show poster, designed by Looking Sideways art director Owen Tozer. It’s the first of a series of three posters we’re releasing this year. The other two will commemorate the events we’ll be holding this summer at the Vans Downtown Showdown and Boardmasters.

We’ll be creating a very limited run of screen prints of this particular design, which will be available to buy at the Looking Sideways show itself, and on the website after the show closes. Keep checking the site for more details, or email us on info@wearelookingsideways.com to find out more.
